Nigerian creators will start monetizing Instagram in June 2024

Meta Platforms Incorporated, led by former UK Deputy Prime Minister and Meta’s President of Global Affairs, Sir Nick Clegg, has announced that the platform will introduce a new feature on its Instagram app, allowing Nigerian creators to monetize their content.

This feature, set to debut in June 2024, aims to empower indigenous content creators to earn a living through the app.

Clegg made this revelation during a visit by the delegation to President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja on Thursday.

“We have a lot to do with Nigeria to deepen partnerships,” Clegg added.

President Tinubu emphasized his administration’s commitment to making Nigeria the leading force in information and communications technology in Africa. He stated that the Federal Government is investing in digital technology to support small businesses and create opportunities across various sectors.

Nigeria cannot afford to lag behind in this era of technological advancement, Tinubu asserted. Hence, the government is focusing on expanding opportunities in information and communications technology while fostering partnerships.

President Tinubu highlighted the significance of Nigerian youths and the government’s efforts to prepare them for the digital economy through initiatives like the 3MTT programme, which aims to train three million youths in digital technology and essential skills.

“We want to lead the African continent in digital technology. Data is valuable to our development,” President Tinubu said.

He emphasized the importance of technology in driving small businesses, expressing a commitment to creating a conducive business environment and promoting mutual interests.

Clegg expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for issuing an executive order enabling the landing of the Meta-backed deep-sea cable in Nigeria. This infrastructure project, scheduled to launch in the first quarter of 2025, is expected to significantly increase economic activity across the African continent.

Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, emphasized the critical role of Meta platforms in Nigeria and highlighted the importance of partnerships in promoting development in the digital economy sector.
